Mom Jennifer Marie Stately stabs son, 6, to death, setting home on fire blocking his brother from escaping: reports

A tragic incident has left a community reeling as a mother has been convicted of a heinous crime that resulted in the deaths of her two young sons. Jennifer Marie Stately, 37, was found guilty of stabbing her six-year-old son, Remi, to death before setting her house on fire, ultimately leading to the death of his younger brother, Tristan, aged five.

The harrowing events took place on March 15, 2024, in Red Lake Nation, Minnesota. Stately fatally stabbed Remi in the chest before deliberately starting multiple fires around her home, including blocking the exits, trapping Tristan inside as the flames engulfed the house.

According to reports, Stately believed that her home was “demonized,” as shared by her defense lawyer during the trial. Tristan tragically succumbed to smoke inhalation, while his mother fled the scene with her three-year-old son, Ethan.

The authorities described Stately’s actions as “horrific and unthinkable,” with FBI Special Agent in Charge, Rick Evanchec, stating that the two boys had “no chance at survival while in the care of the one person who should have kept them safe.”

Despite an Amber Alert being issued, Stately was eventually apprehended around 150 miles south of her home. Initially facing charges of child neglect, malicious punishment, torture, and assault, these were later dropped due to jurisdictional issues as the incident occurred on the Red Lake Reservation.

Subsequently, Stately was indicted for murder and arson. Throughout her trial, her defense attempted to present an insanity plea, which was ultimately rejected by the jury. She was found guilty on five counts of first-degree murder and one count of arson.

Law enforcement officials have expressed relief at the verdict, with Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Superintendent, Drew Evans, acknowledging the impact of Stately’s actions on the Red Lake community. He hopes that holding her accountable for her crimes will bring some measure of justice to the family and the community affected by the tragic loss of the two young boys.

Stately now faces a potential life sentence in prison as per Minnesota law for first-degree murder. Her sentencing is pending, and the community continues to grapple with the devastating consequences of this senseless act.
