More than 200,000 power banks sold on Amazon recalled over fire and burn risks

Recall Issued for 210,000 Portable Lithium-Ion Battery Power Banks Sold on Amazon

In a recent announcement, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled approximately 210,000 portable lithium-ion battery power banks that were sold on Amazon due to potential fire and burn hazards to consumers. The recall specifically involves the INIU 100,000mAh portable power banks, model BI-B41, which were available for purchase on Amazon between August 2021 and April 2022. These power banks come in black or blue cases with the INIU logo and a paw-print LED light on the front.

The reason for the recall is that these power banks have been found to overheat and ignite, posing a serious risk to consumers. The company has received reports of at least 15 incidents where the power banks overheated, including 11 cases of fires resulting in minor burn injuries and property damage. Only power banks with serial numbers 000G21, 000H21, 000I21, and 000L21 are included in this recall.

Safety Precautions for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used in a variety of products such as electronics, appliances, cordless tools, and electric bikes. However, they have been associated with numerous incidents of overheating and fires. Consumers are advised to be cautious and should stop using products with lithium-ion batteries if they notice any of the following signs:

  • An unusual odor
  • A change in color
  • Excessive heat
  • A change in shape
  • Leaking
  • Odd noises

Due to the risk of fire, lithium-ion batteries should not be disposed of in the regular trash or recycling bins. The CPSC recommends contacting your municipal household hazardous waste collection center for proper disposal guidelines for any recalled lithium-ion batteries or devices.
