Multiple Texas students injured in school bus crash on first day of class
A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday in Texas when a school bus carrying more than 40 students rolled over after veering off a rural road on the first day of classes. The crash resulted in multiple injuries, with at least one person sustaining life-threatening injuries and two others facing potentially life-threatening injuries, according to Assistant Chief Kevin Parker of Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services.
The bus was traveling on a remote stretch of a two-lane road when it suddenly veered off the right side for reasons that are still under investigation, as stated by Department of Public Safety Sgt. Billy Ray. The authorities are working to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Video footage from the scene showed the yellow school bus lying on its side next to the road with its roof damaged and several windows shattered.
Officials confirmed that the bus was carrying 42 children, including the driver, and a total of 12 individuals were transported to hospitals for treatment. The severity of the injuries sustained by the person with life-threatening conditions was not specified, leaving it unclear whether they were a student or the driver.
Superintendent Bruce Gearing of the Leander Independent School District revealed that the bus primarily transported elementary school students and that the crash occurred shortly after school dismissal, before any students had been dropped off. He also mentioned that the bus, a 2024 model, was equipped with state-mandated seat belts that the children are required to wear.
In response to the tragic incident, Gearing expressed the district’s solidarity with the affected students and their families, assuring them of their support and offering prayers and thoughts during this difficult time.
As the investigation into the cause of the crash continues, authorities are working diligently to provide assistance and ensure the well-being of all those involved in the incident.
