Musk threatens to sue Apple for not listing X or Grok among its top recommended apps
Elon Musk, the billionaire behind SpaceX, Tesla, and x, recently announced his plans to sue Apple for not featuring x and its Grok artificial intelligence chatbot app in the top recommended apps on the App Store. Musk took to Twitter to express his frustration, questioning Apple’s decision to exclude x and Grok from the “Must Have” section despite their popularity.
Grok, which is owned by Musk’s artificial intelligence startup xAI, has been gaining traction among users, with Musk claiming it to be the #5 app among all apps. In his tweet, Musk accused Apple of playing politics and stated that their actions are preventing any AI company other than OpenAI from reaching the #1 spot in the App Store, which he considers to be an antitrust violation. Musk further threatened legal action against Apple, although he did not provide any specific details.
Apple, known for its strict App Store guidelines, has been under scrutiny for antitrust violations in recent years. A federal judge recently ruled that Apple violated a court injunction in a case brought by Fortnite maker Epic Games. Additionally, the European Union fined Apple 500 million euros for breaching competition rules by restricting app makers from directing users to cheaper alternatives outside the App Store. Last year, the EU also fined Apple nearly $2 billion for unfairly favoring its own music streaming service over competitors like Spotify.
Despite these controversies, Apple’s App Store continues to feature popular apps like TikTok, Tinder, Duolingo, YouTube, and Bumble at the top of its rankings. Open AI’s ChatGPT, another AI-powered app, was ranked seventh in the App Store.
In conclusion, Musk’s public feud with Apple highlights the ongoing debate surrounding antitrust issues in the tech industry. As the battle between tech giants and app developers continues, it remains to be seen how this legal dispute will unfold. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
