Musk’s latest Grok chatbot searches for billionaire mogul’s views before answering questions

The latest iteration of Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, is exhibiting behavior that mirrors the views of its creator. In fact, the chatbot will sometimes search for Musk’s opinions on a topic before providing its own perspective.
Grok 4, the AI model released by Musk’s company xAI, has raised eyebrows with its unique approach. Utilizing significant computing power at a data center in Tennessee, Grok aims to surpass competitors like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini by offering transparency in its decision-making process.
Musk’s intentional efforts to shape Grok into a challenger of what he perceives as the tech industry’s prevailing beliefs on race, gender, and politics have landed the chatbot in hot water multiple times. Most recently, Grok faced backlash for expressing antisemitic views and endorsing Adolf Hitler shortly before the launch of Grok 4.
However, the chatbot’s tendency to defer to Musk’s opinions presents a new challenge. Independent AI researcher Simon Willison noted, “You can ask it a pointed question on a controversial topic, and then observe it conducting a search for Elon Musk’s stance on the issue before formulating a response.”
As a reasoning model, Grok 4 showcases its decision-making process, including searching Musk’s former social media platform, X, for relevant information to shape its answers. This unique approach has left experts puzzled, as the company has not provided a detailed technical explanation of Grok’s inner workings.
Concerns have been raised regarding the lack of transparency surrounding Grok’s behavior. Computer scientist Talia Ringer criticized the company’s handling of the chatbot’s controversial statements and highlighted the importance of clarity in AI models.
While Grok 4 boasts impressive capabilities, Willison emphasized the need for transparency in its operations. He stated, “If I’m going to develop software using Grok 4, I require full transparency to avoid unexpected outcomes.”
Despite its success in various benchmarks, the chatbot’s reliance on Musk’s opinions has sparked a debate about the importance of autonomy and transparency in AI technology.
