Mysterious international cyberhackers ‘Scattered Spider’ now targeting airline industry: FBI
A Notorious Cyberhacking Group Targets Airlines, FBI Warns
An international cyberhacking group known as “Scattered Spider” has caught the attention of the FBI for targeting the airline industry. The FBI issued a warning alert about the mysterious group, which has previously been involved in data breaches at companies like Aflac and major retailers in the UK.
The FBI highlighted that Scattered Spider employs social engineering techniques, often pretending to be employees or contractors to trick IT help desks into granting access. The agency emphasized the group’s expansion into the airline sector and the potential risks it poses to large corporations and their IT providers.
The FBI also mentioned that the cybercriminals behind Scattered Spider, believed to be young hackers from the US and the UK, have a history of stealing data from corporations and extorting them. The Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency previously issued a security alert about the group’s activities.
Scattered Spider has been associated with various data breaches, including the recent incident at Aflac, where millions of customers’ sensitive information was potentially exposed. The group has also targeted insurance companies and retailers in the UK, as well as casinos in Las Vegas, demanding hefty ransom payments.
In response to the escalating threat posed by Scattered Spider, federal prosecutors have taken legal action against alleged members of the group. The FBI is actively collaborating with aviation and industry partners to address the cyber threats and assist potential victims.
The FBI’s alert serves as a reminder for organizations to remain vigilant against cyber threats and report any suspicious activities promptly. By working together and sharing intelligence, the industry can strengthen its defenses and prevent further compromises from groups like Scattered Spider.
