NAACP files lawsuit against Texas for new congressional map, saying it discriminates against voters of color
A recent lawsuit has been filed against the state of Texas by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) regarding the new congressional map that was recently approved by the state legislature. The NAACP argues that the new maps discriminate against voters of color and violate the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
The lawsuit, which is an amendment to a previous lawsuit filed by the NAACP against the state, contends that the new maps, including the post-census congressional map from 2021 and the state Senate and House maps, dilute the voting power of voters of color and prevent them from electing preferred candidates. The NAACP claims that these maps were intentionally drawn to discriminate against voters of color, which is a violation of the U.S. Constitution and the Voting Rights Act.
Filed on Tuesday, the lawsuit also criticizes the lack of public input and feedback in the process of creating the maps that were ultimately passed by the legislature. NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson stated that Texas’ decision to redistrict before the upcoming midterm elections is racially motivated, with the goal of reducing the representation of Black communities in Congress.
The lawsuit seeks a court declaration that the new map was enacted with discriminatory intent based on race and requests that the state be prohibited from enforcing or using the boundaries outlined in the map. The lawsuit names Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson as defendants.
Supporters of the map argue that it was based on political performance and other factors, but the map has not yet been signed into law. The NAACP’s lawsuit is one of the first legal challenges against the new congressional map, with other ongoing lawsuits also claiming discrimination.
In response to the lawsuit, the NAACP has called on blue states to redraw their own maps in retaliation against Texas. The organization urges states like California and New York to create new, lawful, and constitutional electoral maps to ensure that Black Americans still have a voice in Congress.
The outcome of the lawsuit will have significant implications for the upcoming elections and the representation of voters of color in Texas. It is essential to uphold the principles of fairness and equality in the redistricting process to protect the rights of all voters.
