NASCAR sets date and time for long-awaited Championship format for 2026 season and beyond
NASCAR fans and drivers can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the championship format has been decided by the sanctioning body. The long-standing playoff system, introduced in 2014, has faced criticism over the years for its elimination-style structure. Kevin Harvick’s experience in 2020, where he missed out on a final four spot despite a stellar season, highlighted the flaws in the system. Similarly, Connor Zilisch’s 2025 campaign, featuring 10 wins, also fell short of securing him a championship.
In response to these issues, NASCAR formed a playoff committee in 2025 to address potential changes to the format. The debate on whether to revert to a full-season championship, advocated by racing legend Mark Martin and others, has been ongoing. The official announcement of the new championship format is scheduled for Monday afternoon, with many speculating a modified playoff with a three or four-round finale.
Mark Martin, known for his candid opinions, recently criticized the playoff system in an interview with The Racer. He expressed his displeasure at the alienation of core fans in favor of attracting new ones, labeling the strategy as “dumb.” Martin argued that the current format, which he referred to as a “race-off,” fails to capture the essence of a true playoff.
Joining Martin in his criticism is former Cup Series champion Chase Elliott, who believes in rewarding season-long dominance under the classic points system. Elliott highlighted the pressure on drivers to accumulate stage points, impacting the overall standings and potentially overshadowing consistent performance throughout the season.
As NASCAR prepares to unveil the new championship format, fans and drivers alike are eager to see how the changes will impact the sport. While some anticipate a shift towards a modified playoff structure, others, like Martin and Elliott, advocate for a return to rewarding consistency and long-term success on the track. The upcoming announcement promises to usher in a new era for NASCAR, with the hopes of striking a balance between tradition and innovation in the sport.
