Natalee Holloway killer Joran van der Sloot reportedly tried to kill himself in prison
Joran van der Sloot, the convicted killer of Natalee Holloway, reportedly attempted suicide at the Challapalca Prison in Peru where he is serving a 28-year sentence for the murder of another woman. The 38-year-old was found hanging from a piece of blanket in his cell as guards delivered breakfast, indicating a possible suicide attempt.
According to Peruvian newspaper La Republica, officials confirmed the incident and van der Sloot was taken to the infirmary where he is currently in stable condition but under observation due to his mental state. Challapalca Prison is known for housing the country’s most dangerous inmates.
Van der Sloot is imprisoned for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, 21-year-old business student Stefany Flores Ramirez, who was beaten to death in a hotel room in 2010. This crime occurred five years after the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, an 18-year-old high school student from Alabama who vanished during a class trip to Aruba.
In a chilling confession in 2023, van der Sloot admitted to murdering Natalee Holloway and disposing of her body in the Caribbean Sea. However, he could not be charged due to the statute of limitations. The confession was made as part of a plea deal for extorting money from the Holloway family by providing false information about Natalee’s death and disappearance.
Van der Sloot’s criminal history includes selling drugs in prison in Peru, which led to an additional 18 years being added to his sentence. His release date is currently set for 2045. The tragic saga of Natalee Holloway’s disappearance and van der Sloot’s involvement continues to haunt both families involved in these heartbreaking events.
