National Renewable Energy Laboratory lays off 114 workers in Golden

Following federal energy funding cuts under the Trump administration, more than 100 employees at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Golden campus were laid off on Monday.

An NREL spokesperson stated, “NREL continues to navigate a complex financial and operational landscape shaped by the issuance of stop work orders from federal agencies, new federal directives, and budgetary shifts.”

The spokesperson added, “As a result, NREL has experienced workforce impacts affecting 114 employees across the laboratory. We appreciate their meaningful contributions to the laboratory. NREL’s mission continues to be critical to achieve an affordable and secure energy future. We are grateful for the dedication and commitment of our staff as we continue to advance the laboratory’s work.”

President Donald Trump’s administration recently proposed cutting billions in federal funding for next year, targeting projects such as renewable energy research and programs to combat climate change.

The energy budget proposal aims to cancel over $15 billion in Green New Deal funding for projects like renewable energy and technologies to remove carbon dioxide from the air.

The White House Office of Management and Budget announced that the budget will focus on research and development of technologies for domestic fossil energy, nuclear reactors, and firm baseload power.

NREL, which has over 3,500 employees, postdoctoral researchers, interns, visiting professionals, and subcontractors, faces uncertainty regarding the number of employees at the Golden campus amidst these changes.
