NBA reviewing betting guardrails with sportsbooks amid gambling scandal

The NBA found itself entangled in a gambling scandal, prompting a review of the guardrails in place before the controversy erupted. According to ESPN, discussions between the league and sportsbooks focused on identifying vulnerable bets that could be manipulated. The NBA pinpointed missed free throws, fouls, and turnovers as the most susceptible to manipulation and advised sportsbooks not to offer bets on these outcomes. FanDuel and DraftKings reportedly complied with these recommendations.

The ongoing conversations also addressed individual prop bets, with a particular emphasis on setting lower betting limits due to heightened integrity concerns. An NBA spokesperson highlighted the need for additional scrutiny on prop bets involving individual player performances.

The scandal centered around Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, who allegedly provided inside information to gamblers about his plans to exit a game in 2023, resulting in an influx of bets on the “under” for his statistics. Some bookmakers even removed Rozier’s prop bets from the board just hours before the game, where he played for a brief period before citing a foot injury.

DraftKings stated that recent events showcased the effectiveness of the regulated sports betting industry in uncovering suspicious activities through collaboration between operators, leagues, regulators, law enforcement, and integrity monitoring services. The scandal also implicated Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, who was allegedly involved in a rigged poker scheme.

Both Rozier and Billups were placed on immediate leave by the NBA in response to the controversy. FanDuel noted that their partnership with the league had led to the evolution of their offerings, including the removal of props on players with two-way or ten-day contracts. The scandal has underscored the importance of maintaining integrity in sports betting and the need for continued vigilance to prevent future manipulations.
