NBC Increases ‘Today’ Show Security After Savannah Guthrie’s Mother Disappearance
NBC News Increases Security Measures for “Today” Show Following Nancy Guthrie’s Disappearance
NBC News has taken steps to enhance security for its talent, particularly the hosts of the popular “Today” show, in response to the unexplained disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie. The outlet has escalated security precautions for the show in recent days amidst the ongoing investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s whereabouts.
Private security services and an increased presence of NYPD officers have been deployed for the “Today” show, including around the morning show’s street-level studio located across the street from 30 Rockefeller in Manhattan. Despite the heightened security measures, officials involved in the investigation have not indicated that Savannah Guthrie or anyone at the “Today” show is at risk of being targeted.
The additional security measures were implemented by NBC News as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the show’s hosts and staff. According to a CNN report published on Friday, these measures aim to alleviate some of the stress experienced by the hosts as they continue to address the unresolved mystery surrounding Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.
While NBC News declined to provide further comments on the situation, it is known that Nancy Guthrie, 84, has been missing since January 31 from her Arizona residence. Law enforcement authorities, including local police and the FBI, are treating her disappearance as a possible kidnapping and have offered a $50,000 reward for any valuable leads in the case.
Savannah Guthrie, in a heartfelt plea on Instagram, along with her siblings, urged their mother’s kidnapper to come forward. She expressed the family’s readiness to cooperate but emphasized the need for concrete proof of Nancy Guthrie’s well-being. Savannah Guthrie has postponed her participation in NBC’s coverage of the 2026 Winter Olympics to remain in the U.S. during the investigation.
In a show of solidarity, former “Today” host Hoda Kotb returned to the morning program to support Savannah Guthrie and her family. Kotb, who co-hosted with Guthrie until her departure in 2025, expressed her heartfelt sympathy for the situation. The “Today” show’s current hosts, including Sheinelle Jones, welcomed Kotb’s return, highlighting the bond shared among the show’s team.
