Neighbor of mom accused of kidnapping daughter assumed arresting cops were joking

Unassuming Mom Arrested for Kidnapping Daughter 42 Years Ago

A shocking video has surfaced showing the moment an unsuspecting mom was apprehended for kidnapping her daughter 42 years ago. The incident took place outside her home in Villages, where Debra Newton, 66, was taken into custody by Marion County Sheriff’s deputies.

Newton, who had been using the alias Sharon Nearly, was chatting with a neighbor while walking her dog when the officers arrived. The neighbor, initially thinking it was a joke, humorously commented on the situation until it became apparent that Newton was being arrested.

Newton, wanted for the abduction of her daughter Michelle Marie Newton in 1983, had been living under a false identity in Kentucky. The mother had relocated her and Michelle to Georgia under false pretenses, disappearing before her husband could join them.

Michelle, now 46, grew up unaware of her true identity, raised under a different name by her mother. Newton, now 66, had started a new life in Florida under the name Sharon.

Michelle’s father had been searching for them for decades, but it wasn’t until 2025 when investigators finally located Michelle. Newton, previously on the FBI’s “Top 8 Most Wanted parental-kidnapping fugitives” list, was arrested before Michelle was informed of her true identity.

Upon learning the truth, Michelle reunited with her father for Thanksgiving and expressed no resentment towards her mother. She believes that there is a lot of healing that needs to take place between them and hopes for a reconciliation.

The case serves as a reminder of the complexities and emotional toll of family dynamics, highlighting the importance of communication and honesty in relationships.
