Nestlé dismisses CEO due to an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate

Nestlé, one of the leading Swiss food giants, made headlines on Monday as they announced the dismissal of their CEO, Laurent Freixe, due to an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate. The company stated that the dismissal was effective immediately after an investigation revealed that Freixe’s undisclosed romantic involvement with a direct subordinate violated Nestlé’s code of conduct.

The exact identity of the subordinate in question was not disclosed. Freixe, who had been serving as CEO for just a year, had a long history with Nestlé, having joined the company in France back in 1986. He worked his way up through various roles within the organization, eventually reaching the position of CEO in September of the previous year.

In light of these developments, Nestlé has appointed Philipp Navratil, a seasoned executive within the company, as the new CEO. Navratil, who began his career at Nestlé in 2001 as an internal auditor, has held various positions in Central America before taking on roles within the Coffee Strategic Business Unit and ultimately becoming the CEO of Nestlé’s Nespresso division in 2024.

Chairman Paul Bulcke emphasized the importance of upholding Nestlé’s values and governance, stating, “This was a necessary decision. Nestlé’s values and governance are strong foundations of our company.”
