Netflix Defends The Reckoning After Sean Combs Calls Doc Illegal
Netflix has come to the defense of its docuseries, “Sean Combs: The Reckoning,” after a representative for music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs called the project “illegal.” In a statement to Us Weekly, a Netflix spokesperson refuted the claims made by Diddy’s camp, stating that the footage used in the series was legally obtained and had no ties to past conversations between Diddy and the streaming platform. The spokesperson emphasized that the docuseries is not a “hit piece” or an act of retribution, and that executive producer Curtis Jackson (50 Cent) does not have creative control over the project.
Diddy’s representative had previously described the docuseries as a “shameful hit piece” and alleged that Netflix had misappropriated Diddy’s own footage that he had been amassing since he was 19 to tell his own story. The statement also criticized Netflix for giving creative control to 50 Cent, a longtime adversary of Diddy.
In response to these allegations, the director of “The Reckoning,” Alexandria Stapleton, stated that the footage of Diddy was obtained legally and with the necessary rights. She explained that Diddy has always been filming himself and that it has been an obsession of his throughout the decades.
The docuseries includes never-before-seen footage of Diddy and features insights from his associates and collaborators, including Kirk Burrowes, who co-founded Bad Boy Records with Diddy in 1993. Burrowes discusses Diddy’s aspirations in the music industry and his evolution from a dancer to a pop culture influencer.
One of the topics covered in the series is Diddy’s alleged plan to move $200 million before his arrest in September 2024 on charges of sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in prostitution. Diddy pleaded not guilty to all charges and was ultimately acquitted of the sex trafficking and racketeering charges.
“Sean Combs: The Reckoning” is now available for streaming on Netflix. The docuseries delves into Diddy’s professional pursuits and personal life, offering a comprehensive narrative spanning decades.
