Netflix Japan Unveils Details of 2026 Slate, Forges MAPPA Partnership

Netflix has announced a robust slate of content for its 2026 lineup in Japan, showcasing a strategic partnership with animation powerhouse MAPPA and an expanded production footprint with Toho Studios. The streaming giant is celebrating its 10th anniversary in the Asia Pacific region with a diverse range of offerings, including live-action series, anime productions, and unscripted content.

According to Sakamoto Kaata, VP of content for Japan, the company’s local team has been working closely with creators over the past decade to bring unique and imaginative stories to life. This dedication to creativity has led to record-high viewing hours in Japan, driven by popular anime hits and live-action series like “Alice in Borderland” Season 3 and “Last Samurai Standing.”

One of the most exciting developments is Netflix’s partnership with MAPPA, known for producing acclaimed series like “Chainsaw Man” and “Jujutsu Kaisen.” The collaboration will involve working on new projects from the concept stage, with multiple projects already in development. Sakamoto described this partnership as a way to deepen relationships with Japan’s top creators and studios, leading to more collaborative and innovative projects.

Additionally, Netflix’s expanded agreement with Toho Studios will double its production footprint in Japan and introduce large-scale soundstages for more ambitious sets and productions. The first project under this partnership is “Human Vapor,” a reboot with an original story that brings together top creators from Japan and Korea.

The live-action slate for 2026 includes a variety of exciting series, such as “Quiztopia,” “Straight to Hell,” “Sins of Kujo,” “Soul Mate,” and “Viral Hit.” These series explore themes ranging from dystopian societies and fortune-telling to legal dramas and romance, showcasing a diverse range of storytelling.

On the anime front, Netflix is bringing back popular franchises like “Fire Force,” “Baki-Dou,” “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure,” and “Beastars.” Additionally, the highly anticipated second season of the live-action adaptation of “One Piece” will be launching globally in March. New anime series like “Love Through a Prism,” “Cosmic Princess Kaguya,” and “The Ramparts of Ice” will also be added to the lineup, offering unique and engaging storytelling experiences for viewers.

Overall, Netflix’s 2026 Japan slate promises to be its most exciting and diverse yet, with a mix of live-action and anime content that showcases the creativity and talent of Japanese creators and studios. The strategic partnerships with MAPPA and Toho Studios will only further enhance the streaming giant’s offerings in the region, solidifying its position as a leading provider of premium entertainment in Japan and beyond. Nagase Anna lends her voice to the character Hikawa Koyuki, while Izumi Fuka voices Azumi Miki in the latest Kyoto Animation project titled “Sparks of Tomorrow”. This anime series transports viewers to an alternate early 20th century world where steam power drives technological progress. The stunning backgrounds and dream-like visuals bring to life the aspirations of a young boy and girl as they navigate this fantastical realm.

According to Uchida Yuma, who voices Sakamoto Kihachi, and Amamiya Sora, who portrays Momokawa Inako, the anime industry is experiencing a surge in popularity on a global scale. In fact, one out of every two Netflix members worldwide now tunes in to Japanese anime, with viewing hours tripling over the past five years.
