Netflix Postpones Alex Honnold ‘Skyscraper Live’ Climb Due to Weather

Netflix’s highly anticipated event, “Skyscraper Live,” featuring free solo climber Alex Honnold attempting to conquer the Taipei 101 tower in Taiwan, has been postponed due to rain. The event has now been rescheduled to Saturday night U.S. time (Sunday morning Taiwan time) to ensure the safety of the climber.

In a statement released by Netflix, they said, “Due to weather, we are unable to proceed with today’s SkyscraperLIVE event. It has been rescheduled for Saturday, January 24 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT. Safety remains our top priority, and we appreciate your understanding.”

The decision to postpone the event was made after considering the weather conditions in Taiwan. While the climb was scheduled during the dry season, there was still a possibility of rain. The forecast predicted rain right as the event was set to begin at 9 a.m. local time. However, the weather is expected to be “sunny and pleasant” in Taipei on the rescheduled date, according to Accuweather.

James Smith, head of adventure at Plimsoll Prods. Ltd., mentioned in an interview with Variety that if the building is deemed too wet for the climb, they would delay it to the next day or even further if necessary. The safety and comfort of Alex Honnold are paramount in making such decisions.

The live telecast of the event has been compared to launching a space shuttle by Netflix unscripted VP Jeff Gaspin. He emphasized the importance of ensuring ideal conditions for the climb and mentioned that there are only certain times of the year when climbing the tower is feasible due to weather conditions.

Alex Honnold, known for his daring free solo climbs, will be attempting to conquer the Taipei 101 tower, the 11th tallest building in the world, standing at 1,667 feet. The 2-hour “Skyscraper Live” event will provide viewers with an up-close look at his incredible feat. The show is being produced by Plimsoll Prods. Limited, with Al Berman as showrunner and executive producer.

Honnold’s remarkable climbing skills and determination have been showcased in the Oscar-winning documentary “Free Solo,” which captured his ascent of El Capitan’s “Freerider” route in Yosemite National Park. The “Skyscraper Live” event promises to be a thrilling and unforgettable experience for viewers as they witness Honnold’s incredible talent and bravery in action.
