Netflix Unveils Impact Report for Thailand
Netflix’s Impact on Thailand’s Creative Industry
Less than a decade since Netflix first launched in Thailand, the streaming giant has made significant strides in the country’s creative industry. In its first-ever Impact Report, titled “Netflix in Thailand: Supporting the Future of Local Storytelling,” the company highlighted its commitment to investing in Thai-based productions.
According to the report, Netflix invested $200 million in Thai productions between 2021 and 2024, resulting in 20 films and series that employed 13,500 cast and crew members. The streaming service has also licensed existing Thai titles to include in its programming slate.
In 2025, Netflix’s slate includes nine local originals, consisting of six films and three series. These projects aim to tap into the artistry and authenticity of local storytelling, resonating deeply with Thai audiences. Malobika Banerji, head of content in Southeast Asia at Netflix, emphasized the platform’s collaboration with local creators to tell unique stories that showcase Thailand’s rich cultural heritage.
At a panel discussion following the report unveiling, Netflix executives and industry professionals discussed the streaming service’s focus on authentic Thai content. Ruben Hattari, Netflix’s director of global affairs in Southeast Asia, highlighted the importance of catering to both Thai and international audiences with diverse content offerings.
Thai producer and writer Prabda Yoon noted that horror is a popular genre among Thai audiences, along with comedy drama and BL (Boys’ Love) projects. Hattari emphasized Netflix’s global reach, with over 300 million members across 190 countries, underscoring the importance of producing content that appeals to a wide range of tastes.
The report also highlighted Netflix’s impact on local tourism, as productions have showcased lesser-known areas of Thailand, boosting tourism in those regions. By filming in locations outside of metropolitan centers like Bangkok, Netflix has helped shine a spotlight on the country’s diverse landscapes and cultural heritage.
Overall, Netflix’s investment in Thai productions has not only contributed to job creation and economic growth but has also elevated local storytelling on a global scale. Through partnerships with government agencies and local talent, Netflix continues to play a vital role in shaping Thailand’s creative industry and showcasing the country’s unique cultural identity.
