New FDA-approved eye drop aims to help adults with age-related vision issues
Presbyopia, the age-related blurry vision that affects many individuals as they get older, now has a new solution in the form of FDA-approved eye drops called Vizz. Developed by LENZ Therapeutics, this prescription eye drop is designed to improve vision for up to 10 hours with just one drop in each eye, eliminating the need for reading glasses.
Dr. Robert Johnson Jr., a seasoned optometrist with 46 years of experience at Johnson Family Eyecare in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, explains that Vizz works by mimicking the function of a camera lens. “These eye drops essentially cause your iris to contract, resulting in a smaller pupil size. This mechanism enhances your depth of focus, similar to looking through a pinhole,” Dr. Johnson elaborates.
Priced at $79 for a month’s supply of 25 doses or $198 for a three-month supply of 75 doses, Vizz may vary in cost depending on the pharmacy. While the eye drops offer promising results, there are potential side effects such as eye redness, headaches, and temporary vision dimming.
Despite the benefits of Vizz, Dr. Johnson emphasizes that it is not a cure-all for presbyopia but rather a valuable tool in managing age-related vision issues. “These eye drops may be more effective for individuals in their 40s, 50s, and early 60s, as they still retain some natural focusing ability. However, older patients may not experience the same level of improvement due to diminished focusing capacity,” he advises.
For those considering Vizz as a treatment option, Dr. Johnson recommends consulting with an eye care professional to determine suitability and potential benefits. While the eye drops offer a convenient solution for combating presbyopia, they may not be suitable for everyone and individual assessment is crucial.
