New images show White House East Wing leveled for $300 million ballroom

The construction of the new White House ballroom is now visible from the Washington Monument after the government shutdown ended. ABC News captured video footage showing the progress of the project, which was previously hidden during the 43-day shutdown that concluded on Nov. 12.

The images reveal the demolition of the historic East Wing, which was originally built in 1902 and served as the formal office of the first lady since 1977. The site has been cleared of rubble by bulldozers and skip loaders, making way for the construction of a 90,000-square-foot ballroom at an estimated cost of $300 million. President Donald Trump has approved the plans for the new ballroom, which will be funded through private donations.

In October, it was confirmed that $350 million had already been raised for the project, with additional donations continuing to pour in. Trump mentioned the possibility of using the extra $50 million to build a large triumphal arch, inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

Despite the progress on the ballroom, a majority of Americans oppose the demolition of the East Wing. According to an ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll conducted in October, 56% of Americans are against the construction of the ballroom, with 45% strongly opposing it. Only 28% of respondents support the project, with 15% expressing strong support, while 16% remain undecided.

The controversy surrounding the construction of the new White House ballroom continues to spark debate among Americans, highlighting the conflicting opinions on the preservation of historical landmarks and the development of modern infrastructure.
