New Jersey Newark Public Schools surprise 34 students with $74K teaching job offers at graduation
Newark Public Schools in New Jersey made a groundbreaking move during their high school graduation ceremonies by offering 34 students teaching positions worth $74,000 each. This unprecedented gesture was a result of the students completing a dual enrollment program that prepared them for careers in education.
The students were required to earn a bachelor’s degree and become certified to teach in the state of New Jersey before returning to the district to start their teaching careers. The $74,000 annual salary offered to them is nearly double the average starting salary in the state, making it a highly attractive opportunity for these graduates.
The average entry-level salary in Newark is approximately $34,200, according to ZipRecruiter estimates. However, these students have the opportunity to earn significantly more by becoming teachers in their alma mater.
The Red Hawks Rising Teacher Academy, a program offered through Montclair State University and the American Federation of Teachers, played a crucial role in preparing these future educators. Thirty-two of the students attended East Side High School or University High School and completed this program, setting them up for success in their teaching careers.
Newark Public Schools Superintendent Roger León expressed his excitement about investing in homegrown talent and building a pipeline of teachers who understand and reflect the student population. He emphasized that these contracts signify a long-term strategy to support the growth and development of the district.
During the graduation ceremonies, two additional graduates received specialized offers as well. Miguel Rodriguez Bermudez, an Arts High School graduate, was surprised with a $74,000 contract on stage as he was recognized for his dedication to becoming a music teacher. Another graduate, Alliana Abreu from Barringer High School, was offered an athletic trainer position with the district upon completion of her college requirements.
The school district’s decision to offer these teaching positions to their own graduates highlights the importance of investing in young talent and building a future that starts at home. By providing these opportunities to their students, Newark Public Schools are not only celebrating their achievements but also welcoming them as future colleagues who will give back to the schools and neighborhoods that shaped them.
