New Jersey Woman Allegedly Drains $86,840 From Bank Accounts in Debit Card Fraud Scheme
A recent incident in New Jersey has brought to light a disturbing case of identity theft and financial fraud. According to the Office of New Jersey Attorney General, 46-year-old Ibelis Gonzalez stands accused of draining almost $90,000 from the bank accounts of six individuals using fake IDs.
The alleged crimes took place between May 14th and June 10th, 2024, when Gonzalez reportedly visited multiple Citizens Bank branches across the state. By presenting fraudulent documents, she was able to obtain debit cards for the accounts of her victims. Subsequently, Gonzalez is said to have withdrawn approximately $60,500 through in-person transactions and ATM cash withdrawals from the compromised accounts.
The scheme came to a halt when a bank employee at a Citizens Bank branch in Irvington, New Jersey, became suspicious of Gonzalez’s activities. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that Gonzalez was in possession of a Massachusetts identification card bearing her photograph but issued under a victim’s name.
New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport has voiced her concerns over the impact of identity theft crimes like this, emphasizing the financial losses and disruptions they cause to victims’ lives. Gonzalez now faces charges including second-degree theft by deception, second-degree impersonation/theft of identity, and third-degree offenses involving false government documents.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding personal information and remaining vigilant against potential threats of identity theft. Authorities continue to collaborate with financial institutions to combat such crimes and protect consumers from falling victim to similar scams.
