New Nassau County bill would slash ‘shakedown’ fees for business licenses

Small businesses in Nassau County may soon see some relief from the burden of local fees tied to various permits and licenses. Democratic county legislator Seth Koslow recently introduced legislation aimed at reducing up to 85 percent of these fees for businesses in the area.

Koslow, who is running for County Executive against incumbent Bruce Blakeman, highlighted the excessive fees that businesses in Nassau County are subjected to. He emphasized that these fees can add up to hundreds of dollars annually for businesses such as dry cleaners, locksmiths, dog groomers, health clubs, and home-service providers.

Comparing the fees in Nassau County to those in neighboring Suffolk County, Koslow noted that Nassau’s fees are significantly higher, ranging from $650 to $1,300 per year, while Suffolk County charges just $100 to $200 for similar licenses. This disparity can put Nassau businesses at a competitive disadvantage and disproportionately impact women, minority, and veteran-owned startups.

The proposed legislation takes inspiration from Suffolk County’s licensing fee structure, aiming to level the playing field for businesses in Nassau. Koslow believes that reducing these fees can provide much-needed relief for small businesses facing rising costs and economic challenges.

Financial adviser David Adeoya, who works with small businesses in Nassau County, expressed support for the legislation, noting that lower licensing fees can help businesses allocate more resources towards essentials like inventory, staffing, and equipment. This, in turn, can support business growth and stability in the long run.

County Executive Bruce Blakeman signaled his willingness to support the legislation, acknowledging the potential benefits for businesses. However, he also raised concerns about the impact of significantly reducing licensing fees on the county budget. Blakeman indicated that any fee cuts would need to be accompanied by corresponding reductions in spending to maintain fiscal balance.
