New winter storm brings dangerous wind, snow and ice
A powerful winter storm is making its way eastward on Monday, bringing with it hazardous wind, snow, and ice that are expected to impact millions of people across several states.
In states such as Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland, wind gusts of up to 45 mph are anticipated. In areas like Cleveland, Ohio, Michigan, and parts of Pennsylvania, gusts could reach up to 65 mph, prompting high wind warnings.
Parts of Iowa, Wisconsin, and the upper peninsula of Michigan are under a blizzard warning due to heavy snow and wind gusts of up to 50 mph, causing whiteout conditions. Minneapolis also experienced blowing snow, leading to a winter weather advisory.
Marquette, Michigan, has already seen a foot of snowfall, while parts of Minnesota have reported 6 inches of snow as the storm continues to move eastward on Monday morning.
In the Northeast, the main concern is ice accumulation. An ice storm warning is in effect from New York through much of Vermont, where 4 to 7 tenths of an inch of ice is possible. This amount of ice can pose significant dangers to travel and may result in downed trees and powerlines.
By noon on Monday, the snow is expected to reach Michigan, Ohio, western Pennsylvania, and western New York. Rain will impact Boston to Maine in the afternoon, while icing continues in upstate New York and Vermont.
As the day progresses, rain will taper off in Boston by 6 p.m., with lake effect snow expected in northeast Ohio, northeast Pennsylvania, and upstate New York. This pattern of lake effect snow is likely to persist throughout the week.
Areas like Orchard Park, New York, located outside of Buffalo, could receive 1 to 3 feet of snow this week, with wind gusts of up to 65 mph creating whiteout conditions at times.
This winter storm is a reminder of the unpredictable and sometimes dangerous weather conditions that can impact various regions during the cold season. Stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure your safety during extreme weather events.
