New Yorkers mourn a fallen hero —but don’t count Zohran Mamdani among them
Gotham City is in mourning after the tragic loss of Police Officer Didarul Islam, who was the first to be shot by a madman in a Midtown office building. The shooter, identified as Shane Tamura, went on to kill three more people and wound a fourth before taking his own life.
Officer Islam, 36 years old and off duty at the time, was working as a security guard but was wearing his uniform on Monday. Every police officer knows the risks involved in putting on that uniform, as they become potential targets the moment they step out to protect the public. Islam’s bravery and sacrifice exemplify the dedication of law enforcement officers across the city.
Described by relatives and neighbors as a pillar of his community, Islam was a father of two with his wife expecting their third child. A friend mentioned that he joined the police force because he wanted to leave behind a legacy that his family could be proud of, a goal he certainly achieved through his selfless actions.
Despite Officer Islam’s heroism, there are those who continue to vilify law enforcement officers. Mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, known for his anti-cop views, attempted to moderate his stance following the tragic incident. However, his past statements condemning the NYPD as racist and corrupt cast doubt on his sincerity.
While Mamdani expressed condolences for the victims of the shooting, including Officer Islam, his history of calling for the defunding and dismantling of the police force raises questions about his true intentions. His proposed plan to disband the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group and allocate funds to social workers instead of investing in law enforcement does not align with the sentiments of most New Yorkers who value the sacrifices made by police officers.
In the wake of this tragedy, it is important to honor the memory of Officer Didarul Islam and recognize the dedication and bravery of all law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line to protect the public. Zohran Mamdani’s ambiguous stance on policing does not reflect the sentiments of the community, and he must fully disavow his previous anti-cop rhetoric to gain the trust of the people he seeks to represent.
