NFL to play first regular-season game in France with Saints in 2026

The National Football League (NFL) is set to make history by playing its first regular-season game ever in France next season. The New Orleans Saints will travel to Paris to take on an opponent yet to be determined at the iconic Stade de France. This announcement comes as part of the league’s continued efforts to expand its international presence.

In addition to the game in France, the NFL has also signed a multiyear deal to continue playing regular-season games at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. This move underscores the league’s commitment to reaching fans around the globe.

The NFL has already announced its first game in Australia next season, where the Los Angeles Rams will host a game. In addition to Australia and France, the league also has games planned in Rio de Janeiro, Munich, and three in London. There is also a possibility of returning to Mexico City next season.

With the additions of Australia and France, NFL games will have been played in nine countries outside of the United States after next season. The league has played 62 regular-season games outside the U.S. so far, with various cities including London, Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Madrid, Dublin, Sao Paulo, Mexico City, and Toronto serving as hosts.

Commissioner Roger Goodell expressed his excitement about bringing a regular-season game to Paris in 2026, highlighting the city’s rich sporting and cultural history. The Stade de France, which was built in 1998 and has hosted major international events like the World Cup and the Olympics, will provide a spectacular setting for the game.

Saints owner Gayle Benson also expressed her enthusiasm for playing in France, noting the strong cultural connection between Louisiana and France. The NFL has a significant fan base in France, with over 14 million fans in the country. The league launched a flag football program in 2023 that has already reached more than 8,000 boys and girls.

In Spain, the NFL is continuing its partnership with Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu Stadium for regular-season games. The Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs, and Chicago Bears currently have marketing rights in Spain as part of the league’s Global Markets Program.

The first NFL regular-season game in Spain was played at the Bernabeu last November, with the Dolphins defeating the Washington Commanders 16-13 in overtime. The NFL has identified Spain as an important market globally, with 11 million fans in the country. The league will focus on developing flag football initiatives across Spain to engage fans and promote youth participation.

Overall, the NFL’s expansion into new markets like France and Spain demonstrates its commitment to reaching a global audience and growing the sport internationally. Fans can look forward to more exciting matchups in iconic venues around the world as the league continues to broaden its horizons.
