Nick Reiner Would Interrupt Mom’s Yoga Classes With Meltdowns
Nick Reiner’s former yoga teacher has shared insights into his disruptive behavior during his mother Michele Singer Reiner’s yoga classes when he was a child. Alanna Zabel, who was the Reiner family’s yoga instructor until 2010, revealed to People that Nick, now 32, would often interrupt Michele’s classes with intense issues or meltdowns.
Zabel described Nick as “notorious” for causing disruptions during the yoga sessions, making it challenging for Michele, who is 70 years old. She mentioned that they could never get through a single class without Nick barging in with his drama, breaking the flow of the session.
The tragic events unfolded when Michele and her husband, renowned director Rob Reiner, 78, were found dead in their Brentwood, California home from apparent stab wounds on December 14. Nick, their son, was later arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He faces a grim future with the possibility of life in prison without parole or the death penalty if convicted.
In an effort to help Nick manage his energy and emotions, Michele and Rob asked Zabel to conduct one-on-one yoga sessions with him after his disruptive behavior in group classes. These private sessions proved beneficial, inspiring Zabel to write a children’s book titled “A Chair in the Air,” loosely based on Nick’s experiences.
The book portrays an overly energetic character named Nicky who learns to regulate his emotions and be accountable for his actions. Zabel mentioned that despite their efforts to address Nick’s behavior, it was a challenging situation to diffuse, describing it as a “perfect storm.”
Nick has been open about his struggles with addiction and aggressive behavior in the past. He admitted to destroying his parents’ guesthouse while under the influence of drugs, recounting a particularly chaotic episode on the “Dopey” podcast in August 2018.
His journey through addiction led to his first rehab stint at the age of 15 and periods of homelessness due to relapses. However, he eventually got clean and co-wrote the movie “Being Charlie” in 2015, which depicted a family coping with a son’s addiction struggles. The film was directed by his father, Rob Reiner.
