No one knew what was wrong with her — until an MRI found incurable disease. She turned her harrowing journey into unique art.

Nardiz Cooke’s journey with breast cancer began with a lump in her right breast in late 2018. Initially dismissed as fibrosis, Cooke’s symptoms escalated two years later, leading to a diagnosis of Stage IV metastatic breast cancer that had spread to her brain. Despite the grim prognosis, Cooke decided to focus on her treatment options rather than dwell on worst-case scenarios.

Under the care of Dr. Carmen Calfa, Cooke embarked on a rigorous treatment regimen that included radiation therapy to target the tumors in her brain. Throughout the process, Cooke found solace in a custom-fit thermoplastic mask that guided the radiation beams and protected healthy tissue. She viewed the mask as a symbol of strength, a trophy to signify her journey through treatment.

After completing her radiation therapy, Cooke adorned her masks with quartz crystals, creating a dazzling display that caught the attention of her oncologist, Dr. Jessica Meshman. Inspired by Cooke’s creativity and resilience, Meshman arranged for Cooke’s mask to be displayed at the cancer center, where it served as a source of inspiration for other patients.

The project evolved into “Radiant Sentinels,” a collection of masks donated by patients undergoing cancer treatment. Each mask became a unique canvas, adorned with a variety of materials and symbols that reflected the individual experiences of the donors. Cooke found meaning in the process of creating these masks, learning from each one and honoring the strength and resilience of those who contributed.

Four years after her diagnosis, Cooke’s health is stable, and she continues to thrive under the care of her medical team. She remains dedicated to her treatment regimen, regular appointments, and the ongoing development of the “Radiant Sentinels” collection. The masks were recently showcased at a Miami gallery, where they garnered praise for their beauty and symbolism.

Cooke’s journey with cancer has not only transformed her life but has also given her a new purpose. Despite the challenges she has faced, she has found fulfillment in creating art that inspires and uplifts others. As she continues to add to the “Radiant Sentinels” collection, Cooke remains committed to sharing her story and spreading hope to those battling cancer.
