Noomi Rapace, James Schamus Will Take Center Stage at Göteborg Fest

The upcoming Göteborg Film Festival, set to take place from Jan. 23 to Feb. 1, has announced some major names that will bring star power to the event. One of the highlights will be the presentation of the Nordic Honorary Dragon Award to the talented Swedish actor and producer, Noomi Rapace, on Jan. 28. Rapace is being recognized for her captivating performances that have resonated with audiences worldwide. Artistic director Pia Lundberg praised Rapace for her fearless and uncompromising presence on screen, noting her ability to deeply connect with viewers.

Rapace, whose career spans nearly two decades and includes over 50 films and series, will be honored with a retrospective showcasing three of her most significant works: “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” (2009), “Beyond” (2010), and “Lamb” (2021). In addition to the retrospective, Rapace will be attending the Nordic premiere of the highly anticipated film “Mother,” in which she delivers a powerful performance as Mother Theresa.

The festival has also unveiled a selection of films for its 49th edition, with a focus on the theme of “Truth.” Among the films announced are “The Quiet Beekeper,” “The Voice of Hind Rajab,” “No Comment,” “The Disappearance of Josef Mengele,” and “Re-Creation.” Lundberg explained that in a time where truth is constantly being challenged, the festival aims to explore how film can reflect and influence our understanding of reality.

One of the key guests at the festival will be James Schamus, former CEO of Focus Features, who will head the jury of the Ingmar Bergman International Debut Award and lead industry talks. Schamus, known for his collaborations with director Ang Lee, will share insights into his creative vision and extensive career in the film industry.

The festival’s industry days will feature a new look, with a focus on creating synergies between the TV Drama Vision and Nordic Film Market events. The TV Drama Vision will delve into the transformations shaping the industry, with panels featuring over 100 speakers and discussions on topics such as co-production strategies, audience-first approaches, and sustainable production.

Guest speakers at the TV Drama Vision will include Katharina Eyssen, creator of Netflix’s Emmy-winning show “The Empress.” Eyssen will be part of a German delegation attending the festival as part of a special Country Focus on Germany.
