North Carolina teacher murdered by home intruder while on phone to 911
A tragic incident unfolded in Raleigh, North Carolina, where a beloved science teacher, Zoe Welsh, lost her life at the hands of a career criminal during a home invasion. The heartbreaking event occurred early Saturday morning, when police responded to a burglary at Welsh’s residence.
Welsh, a dedicated teacher with 20 years of experience, called 911 to report the intruder in her home. Tragically, while she was on the phone with dispatchers, the assailant attacked her, resulting in life-threatening injuries. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Welsh succumbed to her wounds.
The suspect, identified as Ryan Camacho, 36, was apprehended nearby and charged with murder and felony burglary. Shockingly, Camacho has a lengthy criminal history with at least two dozen prior arrests. In 2021, he was convicted of escaping from a prison in Salisbury, NC. Additionally, a recent case of breaking and entering against Camacho was dismissed last month due to his mental incapacity.
As the community mourns the loss of Welsh, her friend Olivia Alvarez vows to seek justice for her. Alvarez, who also worked as a house cleaner in Welsh’s home, expressed her grief and determination to hold the perpetrator accountable. The court is set to hear Camacho’s case on Monday.
Raleigh Police Chief Rico Boyce extended his condolences to Welsh’s family and acknowledged the profound impact her death has had on the community. Welsh, who taught AP biology and forensic science at Ravenscroft School since 2006, was described as a dedicated educator and mentor by school officials.
The school has arranged for grief counselors to support students and staff coping with the loss. The investigation into the tragic incident is ongoing as authorities work to unravel the details surrounding Welsh’s untimely death. The legacy of Zoe Welsh, a respected teacher and cherished member of the community, lives on as tributes pour in to honor her memory.
