North Carolina woman Kelsey Pittman found alive nine months after vanishing near Death Valley

A miraculous discovery was made when Kelsey Pittman, a North Carolina resident who had been missing for nine months, was found alive in Colorado. The news was shared by the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook, bringing relief to Pittman’s family and friends.

Pittman’s disappearance dates back to November 2024, when she had contact with law enforcement in Utah. Her car was later discovered abandoned near California’s Death Valley National Park, sparking a widespread search effort by deputies and the National Park Service. The remote area where her car was found, known as “Slab City,” is a popular spot for campers during the winter months.

Despite extensive ground and aerial searches, no additional physical evidence was found regarding Pittman’s whereabouts. The discovery of her abandoned vehicle led to an intensive missing person investigation that lasted for months. Various search teams, including drone operators, cadaver dog handlers, and volunteer search and rescue crews, scoured the area in hopes of finding any trace of Pittman.

The recent news of Pittman being found alive in Colorado comes as a beacon of hope in a series of unexpected discoveries of missing individuals. Hiker Tiffany Slaton, for example, was found in May 2025 after going missing in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains. She managed to survive a blizzard by seeking shelter in an unlocked cabin at a closed resort, where she sustained herself by eating leeks until she was rescued.

The circumstances surrounding Pittman’s disappearance and her miraculous survival in Colorado remain a mystery, as authorities have chosen to respect her privacy and that of her family. The reunion with loved ones after nine months of uncertainty is undoubtedly a moment of joy and relief for all involved.
