North Korea test-fires 2 new missiles amid US-South Korea military drills, state media says

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently oversaw the test-firing of two new types of missiles, according to state media reports. These missile launches coincided with the annual military drills conducted by the United States and South Korea in the southern region.

The missiles tested on Saturday were specifically designed to target aerial threats such as attack drones and cruise missiles, as reported by the Korea Central News Agency. While details on the projectiles were scarce, they were described as “improved” versions based on unique and special technology.

These test launches occurred shortly after the commencement of the “Ulchi Freedom Shield 25” joint military exercises in South Korea. The drills, which include live-fire exercises, were scheduled to run until Thursday. The U.S. State Department emphasized that these exercises were meant to reaffirm the strong commitment between the U.S. and South Korea to defend their respective homelands.

However, a North Korean military official condemned the joint exercises, labeling them as destabilizing for the Korean Peninsula. The official accused the United States and South Korea of disrupting the balance of power in the region.

North Korean state media released images of Kim Jong Un meeting with military officials and showcasing missiles in mid-air. The exact location of the missile tests was not disclosed.

During the onset of the drills, Kim was reportedly inspecting a North Korean naval destroyer, expressing concerns that the U.S.-South Korea exercises could escalate tensions and potentially lead to a war. He advocated for the rapid expansion of North Korea’s nuclear capabilities in response to these perceived threats.

The provocative missile tests and military drills underscore the ongoing tensions in the region, with North Korea asserting its military prowess in response to perceived threats from the U.S. and South Korea. The strategic maneuvers and rhetoric from all parties involved continue to fuel uncertainties and raise concerns about the stability of the Korean Peninsula.
