NYC apartment fire kills 1 after firefighters struggle to put out blaze due to blocked hydrant
A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday evening in Queens, as a raging fire claimed the life of an elderly man inside an apartment building. The efforts of firefighters to extinguish the flames were hampered by a car blocking a fire hydrant, ultimately leading to a devastating outcome.
The fire broke out at an apartment complex on 78th Street between Broadway and Woodside Avenue in Elmhurst just before 7:20 p.m., prompting a swift response from nearly 90 EMS personnel and firefighters from the FDNY. Despite their best efforts, the firefighters encountered challenges due to a car obstructing access to a fire hydrant, slowing down their rescue operations.
During their search, firefighters discovered an 83-year-old man in a rear bedroom of the sixth-floor apartment unit, unconscious and unresponsive with severe injuries. He was rushed to the hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries. The scene was described as having “heavy fire” and “heavy smoke conditions on the whole top floor” by FDNY Deputy Chief Jeff Meister.
The presence of parked cars blocking fire hydrants was highlighted as a recurring issue that hampers firefighting efforts across the city. Deputy Chief Meister emphasized the importance of quick access to water in firefighting operations and expressed frustration over the hindrance caused by vehicles parked illegally in front of hydrants.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical role that unobstructed fire hydrants play in emergency situations and the potentially devastating consequences of such obstructions. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by authorities as the community mourns the loss of the elderly man in this tragic incident.
