NYC Mayor Eric Adams shares Midtown shooting surveillance footage details, calls for gun reform
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has revealed new details about the tragic mass shooting that took place at a Manhattan office building on Monday, resulting in the deaths of four individuals and leaving one injured. Describing the incident as an “intentional, sick, twisted act of violence,” Adams shared insights in an exclusive interview with ABC News.
The gunman, who had driven from Nevada to New York City, specifically targeted the NFL headquarters located within the building at 345 Park Avenue. A note left by the shooter referenced CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), a brain condition often associated with repetitive head injuries, though investigators are still working to ascertain the exact motive behind the attack.
Mayor Adams confirmed that the shooter had played high school football and not at the college or professional level. Security camera footage revealed the gunman’s methodical approach, showing a complete disregard for human life.
Among the victims were Wesley LePatner, a Blackstone employee and mother of two; Didarul Islam, an off-duty NYPD officer; security officer Aland Etienne; and Julia Hyman, a Rudin Management employee. Additionally, an NFL employee was injured during the attack.
Adams commended the building management for their security measures, including having an armed security officer on-site, emergency protocols, and conducting active shooter drills. He praised their actions, stating that they likely saved the lives of many employees.
Jessica Chen, a witness to the shooting, described the harrowing scene of multiple gunshots ringing out on the first floor of the building. Chen and around 150 others barricaded themselves in a conference room on the second floor, fearing for their lives.
In light of the tragedy, Mayor Adams emphasized the urgent need for stricter gun control measures across the nation, highlighting New York City’s status as the safest big city in America. He called for legislative action in response to mass shooters, questioning the accessibility of automatic weapons.
Detectives have been dispatched to Las Vegas to search the shooter’s home and investigate the origin of the weapons used in the attack. It was discovered that parts of the automatic weapon had been purchased by another individual, leading to suspicions of potential accomplices in the crime.
President Donald Trump reached out to Mayor Adams to offer his condolences and commend the NYPD’s swift response to the active shooter situation. Adams lauded the bravery of the officers who entered the building knowing the shooter was present, underscoring the importance of their timely intervention.
