New York City has seen a significant decrease in murders and shootings in the first five months of 2025, marking a historic low in crime rates. In addition to the decrease in homicides, there were also fewer shootings reported during the same period. A total of 264 shootings were recorded, three less than in 2018, highlighting a decline in gun violence incidents. The month of May specifically saw a notable decrease in both murders and shootings, with only 18 homicides and 54 shootings reported, the lowest numbers in recent years.
Mayor Adams, who is running for reelection, expressed pride in the city’s achievements in reducing crime rates. He emphasized his commitment to making New York City safer and driving down crime, stating, “Today, the numbers prove that we have not just kept that promise — we have exceeded it.” Adams credited the success to the efforts of the NYPD and the strategic policing initiatives implemented during his administration.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch also commended the officers for their dedication to keeping the city safe. She acknowledged the challenges posed by recent criminal justice reforms but highlighted the department’s proactive approach in addressing gun violence. Tisch emphasized the importance of data-driven policing strategies and the relentless efforts of law enforcement in tackling crime.
Looking ahead, Tisch reassured the public that the NYPD will continue its efforts to maintain the downward trend in crime rates.
