NYC ‘squatter from hell’ arrested for smashing neighbor’s doorbell camera

The notorious tenant accused of squatting in a rent-controlled West Village apartment was arrested over the weekend for allegedly damaging a neighbor’s doorbell camera. Melvin DeJesus, 66, was captured on camera knocking on the door, leaving a note, and then tearing down the Ring Video Doorbell and taking it with him. He was apprehended by a group of police officers while sitting in a car once owned by his former roommate, John Grafenecker.

DeJesus has a history of criminal charges, including attempted murder in 1987, and now faces charges of criminal mischief and theft for the recent incident. He moved into the apartment at 400 Bleecker St. two decades ago and stayed after Grafenecker’s passing. The building owner has initiated eviction proceedings and a lawsuit against DeJesus for allegedly creating a disruptive environment and terrorizing neighbors.

Despite a court-issued restraining order against DeJesus, neighbors are still feeling unsafe and considering relocating. Some residents have even left the building due to safety concerns. The building management has been criticized for not taking adequate measures to ensure the safety of tenants.

The Brodsky Organization, the building owner, is suing DeJesus for $5.5 million and has obtained a restraining order against him. DeJesus has claimed in court that he has the right to stay in the apartment due to his alleged romantic relationship with Grafenecker, but this claim has been disputed by Grafenecker’s relatives and other tenants in the building.

The ongoing legal battle and disruptive behavior of DeJesus have caused distress among residents, with some feeling that their right to safe housing is being compromised. The situation has escalated to the point where some tenants are considering leaving the building. Despite the challenges, the building owner is committed to maintaining a safe and comfortable living environment for all residents.

As the legal proceedings continue, the fate of DeJesus and the rent-controlled apartment remains uncertain. The tension and fear among residents persist, as they navigate through the turmoil caused by the accused nightmare tenant.
