NYPD buying $389K Wall-E style bomb robot for emergency service operations
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has recently invested nearly $400,000 in a cutting-edge robot called the PackBot 525, designed to assist officers in dangerous situations. This remote-controlled robot, created by Brooklyn-based defense company FLIR, will be utilized by the department’s Emergency Service Unit for various operations.
One of the key features of the PackBot 525 is its mechanical arm, which allows it to pick up weapons and other objects in hazardous environments. For example, in a scenario where a suspect is barricaded with a knife, the robot can safely retrieve the weapon without putting officers at risk. It can also open doors, clear rooms, relay video and audio, and provide protection to law enforcement personnel.
Equipped with HD cameras, improved lighting, a laser range finder, and the ability to lift up to 44 pounds, the PackBot 525 is a versatile tool for bomb disposal, surveillance, scouting, and handling hazardous materials and radiation. Despite its advanced capabilities, the robot is compact enough to fit in a standard car trunk, making it easily transportable to different locations.
The NYPD spokesperson mentioned that the addition of the PackBot 525 will enhance the ESU officers’ command and control at the scene of incidents. The robot’s ability to navigate obstacles, scan for individuals in need of assistance, and operate remotely makes it a valuable asset in critical situations.
This investment in robotic technology is part of the NYPD’s ongoing efforts to enhance its operational capabilities. In recent years, the department has introduced other robotic systems like DigiDog, a robotic canine for dangerous missions, and “throw bots” that can provide live video and audio feedback in active scenes. The PackBot 525 represents a more advanced and specialized tool for handling complex situations, particularly in hostage scenarios.
FLIR, known for its expertise in thermal imaging cameras and sensors, was acquired by Teledyne Technologies in 2021. The collaboration between these companies has resulted in the development of state-of-the-art robotic solutions like the PackBot 525, which is set to play a crucial role in enhancing the safety and effectiveness of the NYPD’s operations.
