NYPD commish Jessica Tisch still hasn’t got job offer from Zohran Mamdani after socialist’s win — but insiders urge her to stay on
As the city waits with bated breath, the future of NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch hangs in the balance. Despite not yet receiving an official offer from Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, sources close to the situation reveal that there is a strong push for Tisch to remain in her role within the socialist administration.
During a conversation prior to Tuesday’s election, Mamdani assured Tisch that they would discuss her continuation as commissioner post-November 4. Following his victory, Mamdani reiterated his commitment to retaining Tisch, commending her for combating the “incompetence and corruption” within the police department under Mayor Eric Adams.
Amidst campaign criticisms over Mamdani’s past anti-cop rhetoric, including labeling the NYPD as “racist” in 2020, influential figures such as Governor Kathy Hochul and House Majority Speaker Hakeem Jeffries have advocated for Tisch’s retention. They believe that her presence would help allay concerns about a potential rise in crime under Mamdani’s leadership.
While Tisch has been advised by her family and key players in law enforcement to accept Mamdani’s offer, some within the police force remain skeptical of the mayor-elect’s commitment to supporting the NYPD. Despite Mamdani’s reassurances and his unveiling of a transition team to aid in staffing his administration, there are lingering doubts about his priorities.
In the event that Tisch declines the offer, Mamdani is reportedly considering appointing Isa Abbassi, a former NYPD chief, as commissioner. Additionally, Rodney Harrison, a former NYPD official with experience as Suffolk County’s police commissioner, is being considered for the role of deputy mayor for public safety.
As the city awaits a final decision, Mamdani remains steadfast in his desire to keep Tisch on board. While Tisch has not yet commented on the situation, Mamdani’s commitment to assembling a government of the “best and the brightest” suggests that the future of the NYPD under his administration is a top priority.
With tensions high and expectations mounting, the fate of Commissioner Jessica Tisch hangs in the balance as New York City prepares for a new era under Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.
