NYPD probing whether gunman who ambushed, killed 21-year-old at her NYC apartment was her abusive ex

Authorities are currently investigating the tragic shooting death of 21-year-old Dashanna Donovan in her Queens apartment, with suspicions pointing towards her abusive ex-boyfriend from South Carolina. The young woman was found fatally shot with multiple wounds to her upper body and head in East Elmhurst, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.

Surveillance footage captured Donovan sitting in the courtyard of her building when she noticed the gunman approaching. She attempted to flee but was caught and shot multiple times in the head, leading to her untimely death. The perpetrator, wearing a distinctive Under Armour blue hoodie, was seen roaming the neighborhood before the attack and was later spotted on a bus and train heading back to Manhattan.

Investigators have honed in on Donovan’s ex-boyfriend from South Carolina, where she previously lived and endured a tumultuous relationship. The suspect is wanted for domestic violence in South Carolina and had a connection to Donovan through their shared employment at Walmart. While a person of interest has been identified, authorities have yet to confirm if he is indeed the perpetrator.

Donovan had relocated to New York City six months prior to live with her grandmother and cousin, seeking refuge from the abusive relationship. Despite not filing any complaints against her boyfriend in New York, her family believes she recognized her attacker before the fatal encounter.

Heartbroken by the loss of her daughter, Helena Hypolite described Donovan as a vibrant young woman who enjoyed dancing and her mother’s chicken curry. Her infectious smile and sense of humor will be dearly missed by those who knew her.

Tragically, Donovan’s employer at McDonald’s contacted her after the incident to inquire about covering a shift the next day, unaware of her passing. Described as a dedicated employee who worked the overnight shift, Donovan’s absence left a void in the workplace.

As the investigation unfolds, the possibility of Donovan’s ex-boyfriend being the assailant looms, highlighting the devastating impact of domestic violence on individuals and their loved ones.
