Obama responds to Trump racist video post, says most Americans find it ‘deeply troubling’
Former President Barack Obama recently addressed the controversial social media post shared by President Donald Trump, which depicted him and former first lady Michelle Obama as apes. Obama condemned the behavior on television and social media as a “clown show” during an interview with podcaster Brian Tyler Cohen.
In response to the post, Obama highlighted that the majority of Americans find such behavior deeply troubling. He expressed concern over the lack of decorum, propriety, and respect for the office that seems to have been lost in today’s society. The former president emphasized the need for a more respectful and dignified discourse in public platforms.
The video in question was posted on Trump’s social media account and featured debunked claims about the 2020 election. Towards the end of the video, the faces of the Obamas were superimposed on the bodies of apes without any context, accompanied by the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”
Initially, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed criticism of the video as “fake outrage,” attributing the racist animation to an “internet meme” depicting Trump as the king of the jungle and Democrats as various animals. However, a White House official later claimed that a staffer had erroneously made the post.
Despite the backlash, Trump defended the video, stating that he did not see the entire content before it was posted on his account. He maintained that he did not make a mistake and that the staffer responsible for the post had not been disciplined.
When questioned about condemning the racist portion of the video, Trump stated that he did so. However, he did not offer an apology for the post or address Americans who were offended by it.
In conclusion, the incident involving the social media post has sparked widespread criticism and calls for accountability. It serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining civility and respect in public discourse, especially on social media platforms. The lack of consequences for such behavior raises concerns about the state of political discourse in today’s society.
