A tragic incident unfolded near the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters and Emory University’s Atlanta campus on Friday afternoon, resulting in the death of a police officer. The active shooter opened fire, leading to a chaotic scene that left the community in shock.
Authorities have not yet identified the DeKalb County Police officer who lost his life in the line of duty. Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, DeKalb County CEO, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting that the officer leaves behind a pregnant wife and two children.
The Atlanta Police Department confirmed that the suspect in the shooting was found dead from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound. Thankfully, no civilians were harmed during the incident. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum revealed that the suspect targeted the CDC building, firing multiple rounds and causing damage to the property.
At the time of the shooting, there were 92 children at a day care center on the CDC campus, all of whom were unharmed. The gunfire erupted at 4:50 p.m., prompting a swift response from law enforcement. DeKalb County police officers located the suspect at the Emory Point CVS Pharmacy and engaged in a gunfire exchange, resulting in the suspect’s death.
Four individuals were transported to the hospital for stress and anxiety-related issues following the traumatic event. A shelter-in-place order was issued for the Emory University campus, which was later lifted. The university advised individuals to “RUN. HIDE. FIGHT” and avoid the area during the incident.
CDC Director Dr. Susan Monarez issued a statement expressing heartbreak over the attack on the Roybal Campus. The CDC remains on lockdown as authorities investigate the shooting, with a focus on ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone on the premises. Governor Brian Kemp thanked the first responders for their bravery in subduing the shooter and saving lives.
The FBI Atlanta and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are actively involved in the investigation. Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr extended thoughts and prayers to the entire campus community at Emory University. The White House is closely monitoring the situation as it unfolds.
