Ohio airman Tyler Simmons among 6 service members killed in military aircraft refueling crash in Iraq

Tech. Sgt. Tyler Simmons, a member of the Ohio Air National Guard, has been identified as one of the six service members who tragically lost their lives in a crash involving two Air Force refueling aircraft in Iraq. The incident occurred during Operation Epic Fury, where the US Air Force KC-135 Stratotankers collided in what was described as “friendly airspace.”

Simmons, a 28-year-old from Columbus, had recently spoken to his mother, Cheryl Simmons, about his deployment to the Middle East. Despite facing challenges, including being shot at, Simmons remained resilient and dedicated to his duty as a boom operator aboard the aircraft.

The 121st Air Refueling Wing, based in Columbus, confirmed that three of its airmen, including Simmons, were among those killed in the crash. The unit expressed deep sorrow for the loss of their comrades and emphasized the significant contributions these individuals had made to their country and the organization.

Family members and friends remembered Simmons for his infectious smile, love for his job, and dedication to his loved ones. Tracy Peaks, Simmons’ cousin, described him as an amazing man who was passionate about his work as an air refueler. Simmons’ positive energy and willingness to help others left a lasting impact on those around him.

Local leaders, including Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther, and Rep. Joyce Beatty, paid tribute to Simmons and the other fallen service members. Governor DeWine expressed his condolences to the families of the Ohioans who lost their lives in the tragic incident.

In a touching gesture, a local restaurant owner decided to honor Simmons by renaming a menu item after him. The establishment renamed their Grippo Sticky wings to “TYLER’S GRIPPO STICK” in memory of Simmons, who was a regular customer and a true hero in their eyes.

While the identities of the remaining crewmembers were not disclosed, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth hailed all the fallen service members as heroes during a Pentagon news conference. He acknowledged the inherent risks and challenges of war but emphasized the bravery and sacrifice of those who serve their country.

The loss of Tech. Sgt. Tyler Simmons and his fellow service members serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel in the line of duty. Their courage and dedication will be remembered and honored by their families, friends, and grateful nation.
