Oklahoma man doing target practice in his backyard accused of fatally shooting woman blocks away
An unfortunate incident occurred in Oklahoma on Christmas day when a man doing target practice in his backyard accidentally shot and killed an elderly woman a few blocks away from his home. The man, identified as Cody Wayne Adams, 33, has been charged with first-degree manslaughter in connection with the tragic shooting.
According to court filings, the victim was sitting on a covered front porch with family members at a residence in Comanche when she was struck by a bullet. She was holding a baby in her left arm and was seated on a love seat when she was hit in her right upper arm, with the bullet entering her chest cavity. Despite the efforts of first responders who were dispatched to the scene, the elderly woman was pronounced dead shortly after.
The family members present at the scene reported hearing someone shooting several rounds north of the residence before the victim was struck. They mentioned that someone had recently acquired a new gun for Christmas, and shortly after, the woman exclaimed ‘ouch’ and collapsed.
Law enforcement investigating the shooting discovered that all neighboring residences, except for Adams’, had suitable shooting backstops or firing locations. Witnesses reported hearing Adams shooting approximately 20 rounds with a new Glock 45 he received for Christmas on the day of the incident.
When deputies questioned Adams at his home, he admitted to shooting the Glock 45 in his backyard towards a Red Bull can. He became visibly upset and tearful when informed that his actions may have caused the victim’s death. Despite shooting towards the ground, Adams was made aware that there was nothing to stop the bullets from traveling beyond his property and potentially harming others.
After being read his Miranda rights, Adams confessed to shooting south from his residence with the Glock handgun loaded with Winchester .45 caliber ammunition. He was subsequently arrested for first-degree manslaughter following consultation with the district attorney’s office.
During his initial court appearance, Adams’ bond was set at $100,000, and a preliminary hearing has been scheduled for February 26. As of now, Adams and his attorney have not issued any statements regarding the incident.
This tragic event serves as a reminder of the importance of gun safety and responsible firearm use to prevent such unfortunate incidents from occurring in the future. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family during this difficult time.
