Oklahoma pediatrician Neha Gupta accused of killing 4-year-old daughter, staging death to look like drowning in Florida pool

An Oklahoma pediatrician, Neha Gupta, is at the center of a tragic and disturbing case involving the death of her 4-year-old daughter, Aria Talathi, in Florida. What initially appeared to be a heartbreaking accidental drowning quickly turned into a murder investigation after authorities discovered inconsistencies in Gupta’s account of the events.

Gupta had called 911 in the early hours of June 27 from their vacation rental in Miami, reporting that her daughter had drowned in the pool. Despite efforts to resuscitate Aria, she was pronounced dead at the hospital. However, a subsequent autopsy revealed no signs of drowning but rather injuries consistent with asphyxiation by smothering.

Miami homicide detectives, upon reviewing surveillance footage, autopsy results, and Gupta’s statement, concluded that she had staged the drowning to cover up the murder of her daughter. A warrant was issued for her arrest, but Gupta had already returned to Oklahoma by then. With the help of local authorities and US Marshals, she was tracked down and arrested in Oklahoma City.

Gupta, who was embroiled in a bitter custody battle with her ex-husband, Dr. Saurabh Talathi, was facing challenges in her personal and professional life. The custody battle, which involved aggressive tactics and protracted legal proceedings, had ended with a judge denying Gupta’s request for sole custody of their child. Additionally, Gupta had obtained a temporary protective order against Talathi, alleging domestic violence, which was later dismissed due to lack of evidence.

In the midst of these personal struggles, Gupta was fired from her position as a pediatrician at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital. The hospital confirmed her suspension and termination from patient care, stating that she was no longer seeing patients as of May 30, 2025. The University of Oklahoma also terminated her employment following her arrest.

As Gupta awaits extradition to Miami-Dade County to face a first-degree murder charge, her attorney has expressed disappointment in the rush to judgment by law enforcement. The case continues to unravel the tragic and complex circumstances surrounding the death of Aria Talathi and the actions of her mother, Neha Gupta.
