Online retailer eBay buying Gen Z secondhand marketplace Depop from Etsy for $1.2B in cash

eBay, an online seller, is aiming to capture a larger portion of the Gen Z market.

The company has announced its acquisition of secondhand fashion marketplace Depop from Etsy for approximately $1.2 billion in cash, as stated by the companies on Wednesday.

This move comes at a time when the demand for used clothing is on the rise, with shoppers looking for unique items at lower prices and a sustainable alternative to discarding old clothes.

According to eBay’s CEO Jamie Ianonne, the acquisition presents an opportunity to attract a younger demographic.

“We are confident that as part of eBay, Depop will be even more well-positioned for long-term growth, benefiting from our scale, complementary offerings, and operational capabilities,” Ianonne stated.

As of Dec. 31, 2025, Depop’s marketplace had 7 million active buyers, nearly 90% of which are under the age of 34, and more than 3 million active sellers, the joint release said.

This deal comes five years after Etsy acquired Depop for $1.6 billion. The app was founded in 2011.
