OpenAI launches web browser, ChatGPT Atlas, in challenge to Google

OpenAI announced the launch of a new AI-powered web browser, ChatGPT Atlas, in a move that intensifies its competition with Google, the dominant force in online search. The browser is currently available exclusively on Apple laptops running the Mac operating system, with plans to expand to iOS, Windows, and Android platforms in the near future.

In a video presentation introducing Atlas, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described the browser as a revolutionary tool built around ChatGPT technology, allowing users to interact with web pages through conversation. Altman expressed confidence that the traditional URL bar will eventually be replaced by a chatbot interface, marking a significant shift in browser functionality.

Key Features of the Atlas Browser

Similar to traditional search engines, Atlas features a homepage with a search bar for querying information, akin to Google’s search bar. Users can navigate through tabs at the top of the browser to access news articles, images, and other content.

One standout feature of Atlas is the ChatGPT sidebar, activated by clicking the “Ask ChatGPT” button in the upper right-hand corner. This functionality allows users to engage with ChatGPT in real-time, tailored to the specific web page they are viewing. Users can ask questions and seek assistance while browsing or even while composing emails, as demonstrated in the unveiling video.

Additionally, Atlas offers an “agent mode” that can perform tasks on behalf of users based on their browsing history and search queries. From booking flights to editing documents or ordering groceries, the agent mode streamlines various tasks for users, with advanced features available for plus and pro users.

OpenAI boasts over 800 million ChatGPT users, though the company has yet to achieve profitability. In comparison, Google’s Chrome browser boasts around 3 billion users worldwide and has been incorporating AI features leveraging its Gemini AI technology.
