OpenAI says it will start testing ads on ChatGPT in the coming weeks
OpenAI has recently announced its plans to introduce ads on ChatGPT, a move that could potentially open up a new revenue stream for the AI company alongside its existing subscription-based models. The ads will be integrated at the bottom of the chat window, appearing only when there is a relevant sponsored product or service related to the ongoing conversation.
For instance, if a user asks for recommendations on authentic Mexican dishes, ChatGPT may suggest carne asada and pollo al carbon while also linking to a grocery brand advertising hot sauce. These ads will be visible to users of the free version of ChatGPT or those subscribed to the new low-cost plan, ChatGPT Go. Higher-tier subscriptions like Pro, priced at $200 a month, will remain ad-free.
OpenAI has assured users that the ads will not influence the responses provided by ChatGPT, nor will it share any user conversations or data with advertisers. The company has not disclosed the specific advertisers yet but has mentioned that more information on early partners will be shared soon.
The introduction of ads is aimed at keeping the free and low-cost versions of ChatGPT accessible to a wider audience. OpenAI believes that having a diverse revenue model, including ads, will contribute to making intelligence more widely available to everyone.
Although valued at $500 billion, OpenAI has yet to turn a profit, as reported by CNBC. The additional revenue generated from ads could potentially support the growth of ChatGPT and cover ongoing expenses. Melissa Otto, head of research at S&P Global Visible Alpha, believes that this influx of cash flow could be beneficial for the AI company.
However, the role of ads in OpenAI’s overall business strategy remains to be seen. CEO Sam Altman previously downplayed the significance of ads in the company’s revenue stream, suggesting that it may not be the primary revenue opportunity. Nonetheless, the implementation of ads on ChatGPT marks a significant step towards diversifying OpenAI’s revenue sources.
In conclusion, the integration of ads on ChatGPT signifies a strategic move by OpenAI to explore new avenues for generating revenue while maintaining accessibility for users. This development showcases the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in the AI landscape.
