Oppo Find X8 Ultra Camera Review: Sample Photos
Oppo has recently extended its partnership with the iconic photography company, Hasselblad. To celebrate this collaboration, I had the opportunity to visit Hasselblad’s hometown in Gothenburg, Sweden, where I spent a week capturing photos using Oppo’s most powerful camera phone, the Find X8 Ultra.
Although the Find X8 Ultra was initially released in April, it was only officially available in China, limiting my ability to fully explore its capabilities. With claims of being the best camera phone on the market, the competition from industry giants like Google, Samsung, and Apple is intense. So, how does the Find X8 Ultra measure up?
### The Camera Hardware
The Oppo Find X8 Ultra features a 1-inch type sensor, making it the largest sensor found in a modern smartphone. This sensor size surpasses those of popular flagship models like the iPhone 16 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra by approximately 30%. The larger sensor enables better performance in low-light environments and enhances background blur in close-up shots, akin to what you would expect from a mirrorless camera or DSLR.
The phone boasts a main camera, a 15mm-equivalent ultrawide lens, a 70mm (3x) periscope telephoto lens, and a 135mm (6x) telephoto lens. Additionally, there is a dedicated color spectrum sensor to ensure accurate white balance in diverse lighting conditions. All these cameras feature a 50MP resolution sensor, with most utilizing larger sensors compared to mainstream competitors. The device also includes a 32MP selfie camera with autofocus.
Despite the impressive array of lenses, the camera bump on the Find X8 Ultra remains relatively slim, showcasing the intricate engineering behind the handset.
### Image Processing and Collaboration with Hasselblad
While hardware plays a crucial role, image processing is equally vital for achieving optimal results with camera phones. The collaboration with Hasselblad has led to a Hasselblad-tuned Master Mode, film simulations, and extensive manual control options, enhancing the overall photography experience.
### The Results
During my time in Gothenburg, I was consistently impressed by the photos captured on the Find X8 Ultra, irrespective of lighting conditions or subjects. The cameras excelled in bringing out intricate details and featured a visually appealing color palette.
The device tends to favor cooler tones, especially when utilizing Hasselblad film simulations. While this aesthetic suited the Swedish architecture during my trip, accurately representing the warmth of the sun proved challenging. The 3x telephoto lens excelled in capturing close-ups of food and nature, while the 6x telephoto lens allowed for digital zooming up to approximately 20x with minimal loss in quality.
In low-light settings, the main camera delivered exceptional performance, making it ideal for indoor settings and nighttime photography. The selfie camera, though not a primary highlight, produced high-quality images with excellent skin tones and detail. The ultrawide lens, while decent, did not stand out significantly compared to the other lenses.
### Is the Oppo Find X8 Ultra the Best Camera Phone?
While the Oppo Find X8 Ultra is undeniably impressive, declaring it the best camera phone remains subjective. It competes with top-tier models like the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, Vivo X200 Ultra, and Huawei Pura 80 Ultra. However, availability in Western markets, particularly the US and UK, poses a challenge.
Despite Oppo’s comeback in Europe and the UK with the Find X8 Pro, the Ultra variant is yet to make its international debut. The continuation of the Hasselblad partnership hints at exciting prospects for future Oppo releases. For now, Apple and Samsung maintain their dominance, but serious photographers may find the latest batch of Ultra flagship phones from China more appealing.
