Over 1,500 flights canceled, delays mount nationwide on Saturday

The ongoing government shutdown has continued to wreak havoc on air travel, with more than 1,500 flights canceled nationwide on Saturday alone. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been forced to limit flight capacity at 40 major U.S. airports, leading to widespread disruptions and delays.

By Saturday evening, a total of 1,521 flights had been canceled, surpassing the previous day’s count of 1,024 cancellations. In addition, over 6,400 flights were delayed, causing major headaches for travelers across the country. The staffing issues in air traffic control towers and centers have only exacerbated the situation, leading to further delays and cancellations.

Major airlines such as Delta, American Airlines, United, and Southwest have all reported a significant number of flight cancellations and delays. Delta, for instance, had approximately 7% of its flights canceled and 30% delayed, while American Airlines and United each had 3% of their flights canceled and 30% delayed. Southwest also experienced 3% of its flights being canceled and 25% delayed.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy expressed concerns about the ongoing impact of the government shutdown on air travel. In an interview, he stated that if the shutdown persists, more reductions in air travel could be expected. The Department of Transportation may even request airlines to cancel more than 10% of their flights if air traffic controllers continue to call out in higher numbers.

Despite the challenges, Duffy emphasized the importance of ending the government shutdown promptly to allow Americans to travel without disruptions. He also mentioned that the FAA has advised private jets to avoid flying to the affected airports to alleviate pressure, although they are not currently prohibited from doing so.

It is crucial to note that the FAA has refrained from cutting any international flights due to existing international agreements. Duffy highlighted the significance of honoring these agreements to prevent other countries from retaliating by reducing American flights, which could have long-lasting consequences on international travel.

Overall, the ongoing government shutdown continues to have a profound impact on air travel, with airlines and travelers alike facing unprecedented challenges. As the situation evolves, it remains to be seen how the aviation industry will navigate these turbulent times and ensure the smooth operation of flights across the country.
