Over 40 million Americans on alert for winter storm conditions over the weekend

A historic nor’easter is set to make its way up the East Coast from Sunday to Monday, bringing with it significant snowfall for the I-95 corridor and putting New York City under a blizzard warning for the first time in almost a decade. The last blizzard warning for the city was issued back in March 2017.

With more than 40 million Americans on alert for winter storm conditions starting on Sunday and extending into Monday, the National Weather Service has upgraded several areas to a blizzard warning. Southern Delaware, the Jersey Shore, all of New York City, Long Island, and coastal Connecticut are all under this warning due to the expected snowfall of over one foot and strong gusty winds that are likely to create blizzard-like conditions.

In addition to the blizzard warning, coastal flood watches have been issued from coastal Delaware to the Jersey Shore and Long Island to southern New England. These areas are expected to experience minor to moderate coastal flooding during high tide.

As the forecast becomes more definitive, additional winter weather alerts are anticipated to be issued across the Northeast in the next 24 hours. While the exact snowfall amounts and the areas most affected by the storm are still uncertain, there is a growing confidence that the eastern seaboard will face a powerful coastal storm bringing heavy snow, high winds, and coastal flooding from Sunday through late Monday.

The storm is forecasted to develop over the coastal Carolinas on Sunday, initially bringing rain to the Mid-Atlantic and scattered light to moderate snow from Northern Virginia to Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York by Sunday afternoon. By late Sunday, the storm will intensify off the coast of North Carolina and Virginia as it moves northeastward along the East Coast.

By early Monday morning, heavy snow, strong winds, and coastal flooding are expected across much of the coastal Northeast. Areas like the Jersey Shore, Long Island, southern New England, and Cape Cod could experience blizzard-like conditions with heavy snow and powerful wind gusts.

By Monday evening, snowfall is predicted to diminish across the Northeast, except for New England where intermittent precipitation may still occur. Stay updated with the latest weather alerts and advisories as this powerful nor’easter approaches the region.
